The Cougars (2-1) started the match by taking the doubles point home with wins at the first and third matches. The duo of Alejandro Portugal and Jorge Padilla picked up Winthrop's only win.
Pushed by sophomore Vinicius Bortolatto, the Eagles posted three wins in singles play. Bortolatto at number one, sophomores Rodrigo Santos at number two and Portugal at number four left the court victorious, but College of Charleston's three wins gave the scoreboard final numbers.
Winthrop's next match will be at home against NAIA school Auburn-Montgomery on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Cougars host Davidson the 25th in their SoCon opener at 2:00 p.m.
