GREENVILLE, S.C. --- A goal in the 48th minute by senior forward Steven Nagy was the difference, as the College of Charleston men's soccer team knocked off Furman, 2-1 on Friday night in Southern Conference action. The match was nationally televised on the Fox Soccer Channel, which was a first for the College of Charleston program.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 9-7-0 on the year, 3-3-0 in the Southern Conference, while Furman drops to 10-6-1, 4-2-0 in the SoCon.
In the first half, the Cougars got on the scoreboard quickly, as Zach Prince scored his fourth goal of the season. Jake Helmig was credited with an assist on Prince's goal, which was the junior's second in two games.
In the 13th minute, Furman knotted the game up at one, as Andrew Krysiak scored his fourth goal of the season. Coleton Henning and Dane Roberts were credited with assists on the goal.
Both teams then kept each other off the scoreboard for the rest of the period, as the game remained tied at one going into the half.
In the second half, the Cougars came out and scored quickly once again, as Nagy scored his first goal of the season after he received the ball off a deflection from a Furman defender.
Furman dominated the rest of the match offensively, as they out shot the Cougars 9-4 in the period. The Charleston defense, however, held strong the rest of the half, as they kept the Paladins from scoring to hang on to win the match.
In goal, Clark Hankins started the second half in net, but was replaced in the 54th minute by Brendan Smith after suffering an injury. Smith came on and was terrific in goal, as he turned away Furman's numerous attempts to score.
Smith ended the night making three saves in just 36 minutes of play, one of which was a diving stop in the final 20 minutes that stopped Furman's last offensive threat of the night.
The Cougars are now idle until Nov. 1st, when they travel to Coastal Carolina for an out-of-conference tilt. Game-time is set for 7 p.m.
