
CofC Men?s Soccer Squad Set for Southern Conference Semifinal Match against Elon

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The College of Charleston men's soccer team, fresh off a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over Appalachian State in the first round of the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships, will play Elon in the semifinals of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 14th at 4:30 p.m.
The match will be held at Alumni Soccer Stadium in Davidson, N.C.
The Cougars, 10-9 overall on the year and the fifth-seed in this year's tournament, earned a trip to Davidson after junior Kareem Yearwood (Sousou Lands, Tobago) netted his sixth goal of the season seven minutes into the first overtime period to lift the Cougars to victory over Appalachian State.
In the win, sophomore Gus Teren (Nashville, Tenn.) played a vital role, as he came off the bench and recorded three points. Teren scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute of regulation, then assisted on Yearwood's game-winner in the overtime period.
For the year, senior Matt Morris (Anderson, S.C.) leads the team in scoring 15 points (seven goals and an assist). Morris scored a goal during the Appalachian State match in the 28th minute that knotted the game up at one.
Elon, 9-8-1 on the year, advanced to the semi's after a dominating 3-0 win over Wofford in the first round. Three separate Elon players scored goals in the victory.
The Phoenix entered the tournament as the top-seed after they went a perfect 7-0-0 in SoCon play this season. After starting the season 2-8-1, Elon has rattled off victories in eight of their last 10 matches with their only losses coming to Duke and Wake Forest.
Elon is led by the Southern Conference's player of the year in Justin Wyatt, who leads his team and the conference in scoring with 31 points (12 goals, seven assists). Aaron Parker is also one of the top scorers in the conference with 20 points (seven points, six assists).
In goal, Kyle Boerner and Clint Irwin have shared duties in goal throughout the season. Irwin picked up a shutout win in the Wofford match, as he made four saves in goal to preserve the win.
Earlier this season, Elon picked up a 1-0 win over the Cougars, as Wyatt scored the eventual game-winner 39 seconds into the match. All-time in Southern Conference tournament games, the Cougars hold a 2-0 edge.
The winner of the Elon-College of Charleston match will face off with the winner of the other semifinal match between Georgia Southern and UNC Greensboro. The championship match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 16th at Davidson beginning at 1 p.m.
