MIAMI, Fla. - No. 73 College of Charleston women's tennis upset 62nd-ranked Boston University, 5-2, on the final day of the Intercollegiate Women's Kick-Off Weekend at the University of Miami.
"The players really rebounded from a close and tough loss to Mississippi State yesterday", head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. "It's exciting to get a win in a national tournament like this. Boston has a strong women's tennis program, as evident by its string of 14 straight America East conference championships."
The Cougars (1-3) earned the doubles point off wins by partners Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) as well as Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Page) and Irene Viana (Paris, France/Lycee de Montgeron). The 44th-ranked duo in the country, Dowse and Hayman overtook Monika Mical and Francine Whu 8-5 at the No. 1 spot. Newman and Viana earned their first victory as partners over third-seeded Jessi Linero and Inayat Khosla, 8-3.
After entering singles competition with a 1-0 lead, the Cougars quickly added two points to their team score as No. 144 Hayman and No. 102 junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) defeated their opponents in straight sets at the second and fourth spots, respectively. Hayman beat Whu for the second time Sunday morning, 6-2, 6-3 while Casey defeated Petra Santini 6-0, 6-3.
Senior Anna Lee Evans (Vilas, N.C./Watauga) increased Charleston's lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Inayat Khosla at the No. 6 spot. Newman picked her second victory of the morning with the fourth straight singles victory for the Cougars. She pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Linero at the No. 3 spot.
The Terriers (0-4) won the final two singles matches, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars finished with a 5-2 victory. Top-seeded Dowse forced BU's Stefanie Nunic to a third set before conceding a 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 victory. Junior Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) also took her opponent to a third set before eventually falling 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.
The Cougars return to Charleston for a short break before returning to Florida to face Stetson in Deland, Fla. on Feb. 19.
