COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland freshman Pe'Shon Howard hit the game-winning shot with three seconds left as the Terrapins escaped the College of Charleston, 75-74, Wednesday night before a crowd of 13,708 raucous fans at Comcast Center.
Senior Andrew Goudelock (Stone Mountain, Ga.) responded quickly by pushing the ball up the court, but his three-point attempt at the top of the key hit the rim as the clock expired. Goudelock ended the night with his fourth career double-double with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds.
Maryland (2-0) trailed 68-60 with 8:36 remaining in regulation, but held the Cougars (0-1) without a field goal the rest of the way.
Preseason John R. Wooden Award candidate Jordan Williams registered 26 points and 15 rebounds to pace the Terrapins, who went 5-of-18 from the charity stripe and scored the majority of their points (56-of-75) in the paint behind Williams' play.
The Cougar defense held Maryland deep into the shot clock for most of their first-half possessions. The Terps, known for their pressing defense, committed 18 turnovers as junior Antwaine Wiggins (Greeneville, Tenn.) and sophomore Andrew Lawrence (London, England) combined for five of the team's eight steals.
Goudelock showed there were no limits to his range knocking down several NBA threes including one deep from downtown to give the Cougars their largest lead of the ballgame, a nine-point advantage at the 2:32 mark in the first half, against the defending ACC regular-season champions.
CofC never let the game get out of hand as the Terps managed only a five-point lead throughout the contest. Senior Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 15 points, while senior Jeremy Simmons (Lithonia, Ga.) contributed 10 in the close loss.
The Cougars will continue their two-game season-opening road swing at Holy Cross (0-0) on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Worcester, Mass. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. (ET).
POSTGAME NOTES
• College of Charleston used the starting lineup of Donavan Monroe, Andrew Goudelock, Antwaine Wiggins, Willis Hall and Jeremy Simmons. It marked the eighth career start for Hall and first time of Monroe's four-year career to run the point for the Cougars.

• Andrew Goudelock registered his fourth career double-double with 13 of his game-high 27 points and eight of his 10 rebounds in the first half alone. It marked his 27th 20-point game of his career. Goudelock continues to chase the all-time career scoring record held by Ken Gustafson and now has 1,721 career points to date.

• Two true freshmen Trent Wiedeman and James Carlton made their collegiate debuts at Maryland. Wiedeman contributed six points, six rebounds and one block in 23 minutes of action, while Carlton played two minutes in the first half.
POSTGAME QUOTES
College of Charleston Head Coach Bobby Cremins
On the game …
“It was a great game. I was really proud of my team. I thought we had it won. We put ourselves in a position to win the game. I give Maryland a lot of credit. They never gave up and their freshman (Pe'Shon Howard) made a heck of shot at the end and (Andrew) Goudelock almost put it in. It's his shot and he is capable of making it.”
On looking ahead to Holy Cross …
“We are down, because we felt like we had a chance to win the game. When you have a chance to win the game, it's not a good feeling. I'm proud of our guys thought. They didn't break. We hung in there. Maryland almost broke it open. We had a few leaks, but we didn't break. It was a great learning experience for us and a real honor to play this program. Gary (Williams) is as classy as they come. He has a young team, but they are tough. They fought hard, so give them a lot of credit. His kids made great steals tonight. He can really coach that pressing defense.”
On both team's turnovers in the game…
“It was sloppy play. There were a lot of turnovers in the game. We had a heavy leak right before the half. We should have been up at halftime. Then, we lost our lead and then we hung in there and Goudelock got hot. We will keep on going to work (to improve on tonight's performance).”
