MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis didn't drop a single set as the Cougars cruised to 7-0 victories over Western Carolina and Charlotte at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Sunday.
CofC (7-4, 3-0 SoCon) swept the Catamounts (1-2, 0-1 SoCon) for the seventh consecutive year as the team claimed its third conference win of the season.
Southern Conference Player of the Week sophomore Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C./Pope) stretched her singles win streak to five at the second and third spots, respectively. After edging WCU's Izabella Glinska 7-6 in the first set, Newman dominated the second set 6-0 for the win. She followed up with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Charlotte's Kimber Redfern in the afternoon match.
Newman also paired with senior Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Secondary) to pick up an 8-2 victory over the 49ers at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Returning from a one-match hiatus, senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) earned an easy 6-0, 3-0 victory in her first singles match of the day before moving on to defeat Charlotte's Alexandra Zinn 6-1, 6-2 at the top spot. Dowse also picked up two victories in doubles action, teaming up with junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) for a pair of 8-3 wins at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Juniors Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) and Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) each brought their singles win streaks to four matches. Hayman defeated WCU's Amanda Massey 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Casey picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win against Catamount Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz at the No. 4 spot before moving to the second spot to defeat 49ers' Andrea Rivera, 6-4, 6-2 in the afternoon match.
Charlotte dropped to 3-6 on the year after the loss.
College of Charleston will play another doubleheader at Patriots Point on Wednesday. After meeting Case Western Reserve in a 9:30 a.m. match, the Cougars will host 53rd-ranked Wake Forest at 2 p.m.
