Head coach Jay Bruner and his squad return home after going 1-1 in Los Angeles last week. The Cougars (4-3) rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Loyola Marymount to defeat Gonzaga, 6-1, the following day. Their match on Friday against No. 55 North Carolina State is just the second home contest of the year, after opening the 2011 season with a 6-1 win over Gardner-Webb on Jan. 30.
The Wolfpack (7-4) split its last road trip, shutting out No. 73 William & Mary 7-0 before falling to the 75th-ranked Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University, 5-2 on Feb. 26. The Pack takes the court for the first time in almost two weeks Friday for the 2 p.m. match. Juniors Dominic Hodgson and Jamie Pulgar and freshman Ivan Sanchez Gomez have each registered seven wins on the season.
CofC makes a quick turnaround, playing its first conference match of the season at 10 a.m. Saturday against Appalachian State. The Cougars went a perfect 10-0 against SoCon opponents last year, defeating Furman to earn the regular-season championship. Seven players return from last year's squad, including Southern Conference Player of the Year Lukas Koncilia (Tyrol, Austria/Franciscian).
The Mountaineers are currently 6-3 on the year, after going 12-9 and 4-6 in the conference in 2010. The team is led by juniors Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet, who are on a six-match winning streak as the top seed in doubles competition. The two teams join Elon as the last teams to begin the conference portion of its schedule.
