Softball Drops Seesaw Battle to Georgia Southern

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team fell, 6-5, in a back-and-forth Southern Conference series conclusion to Georgia Southern on Sunday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars led twice in the game but were doomed by a three-run seventh inning for the second game in a row.

Katie Forbes (Odessa, Fla.) continued to swing a hot bat and was 3-for-3 on the day with an RBI and run scored.

Lizzy Vaughn (Placerville, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with a triple and pair of RBIs.

Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) extended her hit streak to eight games and has at least one hit in 23 of CofC's last 24 games.

A day after being no-hit in Saturday's doubleheader opener, the Eagles exploded for 13 hits in the contest.

They got started right away with base hits in their first three at bats to score the game's first run in the top of the first. Alexa Datko (San Diego, Calif.) - who threw Saturday's no hitter - worked out of the jam to minimize the damage.

The Cougars grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third when Corthell was hit by a pitch and Vaughn drove a two-out triple down the right field line to bring Corthell around to score. Katie Pesature (Brewster, N.Y.) then doubled to score Vaughn and put CofC on top, 2-1.

The Cougars added one more in the fifth with a one-out single by Forbes and RBI double off the bat of Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.).

Georgia Southern battled back in the sixth with a leadoff double by Megen Smith, an RBI single by Tabby Douberley and RBI double from Sarah Purvis to knot the game at 3-3.

CofC responded immediately in its half of the sixth with four consecutive singles from Amanda Lonergan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Corthell , Vaughn and Forbes to move back in front, 5-3.

The lead wasn't strong enough to fend off GSU's rally in the top of the seventh, however. Jorie Walker drew a walk to get things started and Marie Fogle doubled to right field and scored the game-tying run on a groundout. Smith then hit a long home run to left center to score the eventual game winner.

CofC returns to action with a game against South Carolina State on Tuesday evening at Patriots Point. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
