MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team swept its doubleheader against South Carolina State in dominant fashion as the Cougars enforced the eight-run-rule twice in 8-0 and 15-0 wins at Patriots Point on Tuesday evening.
CofC (21-12) had 23 hits in the two games and limited SC State (4-29) to just three.
Alexa Datko (San Diego, Calif.) threw her second no-hitter of the season in the opener as she pitched all five innings perfectly barring one Cougar fielding miscue. It is her second no-hitter in four days. Datko struck out nine batters as well.
Stephanie Saylors (Easley, S.C.) pitched four innings of the second game and allowed just one hit and struck out 11 of the 13 batters she faced. Kylie Day (Alamo, Calif.) pitched the final inning of the game and surrendered just one hit as well.
Kristy Giragosian (Charlotte, N.C.) was 4-for-5 between the two games with three RBIs and three runs scored. Amanda Lonergan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) each had three RBIs on the day as well.
Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) had a hit in both games to extend her hit streak to 10 consecutive games and 25 out of 26.
In the first game, Katie Pesature (Brewster, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Lonergan was 3-for-4 in the second game with three RBIs.
Maria Zavala (Vienna, Va.) recorded her first collegiate base hit when she cracked an RBI double into the gap in the left center in the second game.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, March 31 with a single game against No. 1 Alabama at Patriots Point at 6 p.m. The Cougars will 'Beat Cancer with a Bat' and be clad in pink jerseys to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The Cougars' pink game jerseys will be available to purchase through an auction which will open after the game and run through Sunday, April 3.
