Cougars? Run Halted by Bulldogs in SoCon Championship Match

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs (19-6) won the doubles point with victories at the first and second spots. After Carson Kadi and Fernando Costa defeated top-seeded Lukas Koncilia (Tyrol, Austria) and Kyle Parker (Richmond, Va.) 8-5, CofC's sophomore Billy Kenny (Pawley's Island, S.C.) and junior Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France) evened things up with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot.
Although junior Tom Delme (Hamoir, Belgium) and sophomore Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va.) kept things close in their match, the duo eventually yielded an 8-6 decision to Zac Dunkle and Alexander Sajonz at the No. 2 spot.
Things didn't improve for the Cougars (17-6) in singles, as the Bulldogs won five of six first sets. Parker earned a 6-2 victory in his first set while Trintignac stretched his to a tiebreak situation before falling to Dunkle at the No. 2 spot. Samford earned wins at the No. 1, 3 and 4 spots to win the team's first Southern Conference championship in program history.
Samford defeats No.2 CofC one day after dropping top-seeded Elon.
"Samford was the better team today," head coach Jay Bruner said. "I am proud that the boys were able to follow up their regular season conference championship with our first trip to the finals in eight years. It was a good tournament for College of Charleston."
College of Charleston brings its 2011 season to a close with its second straight regular season conference title and the best record in Bruner's four-year tenure. The Cougars tied the 2006 squad for best overall record since CofC won the tournament title in 2003. Five players received all-conference accolades.
