BOONE, N.C. - The College of Charleston softball team was swept in its Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. CofC dropped the games by 7-1 and 6-1 totals.
The teams were forced to play a Sunday doubleheader after Saturday's doubleheader was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.
The losses drop CofC to 21-15 (3-8 SoCon) while Appalachian State improves to 13-16 (6-4 SoCon).
GAME ONE: CofC: 1, Appalachian State: 7 (Box Score)
ASU outhit the Cougars, 12-6, as it got past CofC in the opener. Alexa Datko (San Diego, Calif.) was tagged with the loss in the contest.
The Mountaineers struck first when Megan Rembielak reached on a bunt single and stole second before Allie Cashion drove her home with an RBI single to left centerfield. Cashion scored later in the inning by way of a Cougar throwing error on a stolen base.
The next two innings were quiet for both sides until ASU broke out with four runs in the fourth inning. Sheridan Phillips and Michelle Lighton both doubled before Katie Boyd sent a towering shot onto the roof of the field house beyond centerfield to make the score 6-0.
Hillary Stringer (Summerville, S.C.) put CofC on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to straight away center.
The Mountaineers moved one more across in the sixth off of two hits and a CofC error to move the score to the eventual-final 7-1.
GAME TWO: CofC: 1, Appalachian State: 6 (Box Score)
The Cougars limited the Mountaineers to eight hits in the second game but ASU translated them into six runs to come away with the victory. Stephanie Saylors (Easley, S.C.) pitched 4.2 innings and took the loss. Only two of ASU's six runs were earned.
ASU scored first in the second game as well with three singles in four at bats. Saylors recorded strikeouts for each of the three outs in the inning to minimize the damage.
Meghan Smith belted a two-run home run in the third inning to extend the deficit to 3-0.
The Cougars chipped into the ASU lead in the top of the fourth when Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) singled through the middle and Kristi Woodall (Huntersville, N.C.) doubled off the wall in left center to bring Hodgson around.
ASU took the insurance run back, however, when Sarah Rappe reached on a fielding error and scored on Megan Ramielak's RBI single. Hannah Dow then sent a two-RBI double off the wall in right center to push the score to 6-1.
