CHARLESTON, S.C. - Redshirt junior third baseman Matt Leeds (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore right fielder Kristy Giragosian (Charlotte, N.C.) were tabbed College of Charleston Student-Athletes of the Week sponsored by Piggly Wiggly for the week of May 2.
Leeds was named Southern Conference Co-Player of the Week after powering the CofC baseball team to a three-game road series sweep of Wofford on April 29-May 1 in Spartanburg, S.C. He batted .538 with three extra-base hits, six runs driven in and six runs scored. Leeds was a perfect 6-for-6 in Saturday's 24-6 win over the Terriers, setting a season-high in league hits and coming within one of tying the all-time SoCon record. His six-hit performance ties CofC's single-game record set by former player Oliver Marmol against Georgia Southern on April 13, 2007. Leeds also swiped a pair of bases and played error-free ball at third base.
Giragosian led the CofC softball team to a three-game series sweep in its regular-season home finale against Western Carolina on April 29-May 1 at Patriots Point. She batted .300 with five RBI including a game-winning RBI bunt single during a squeeze play in the 10th in Sunday's 3-2 walk-off victory over the Catamounts. She also scored one run in a 6-0 shutout of WCU in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and defensively, converted a run-saving double play by catching a fly ball and gunning down the runner attempting to tag and score in an 8-0 mercy-rule win in game two.
