Cougars Host The Citadel On Tuesday Night

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston returns home for the final week of the 2012 regular season with crosstown rival, The Citadel, coming to TD Arena for a Tuesday night match at 7 p.m.

College of Charleston (21-7, 12-2) is in the hunt for the 2012 SoCon South Division title while The Citadel (6-26, 0-14) will be looking to get its first conference win of the season.

The Cougars are coming off an impressive weekend on the road with wins over Wofford and Furman to keep CofC within one game of first place in the division.

In a sweep over Wofford, senior Emily Shelton recorded 16 digs to become just the second player in CofC history to reach 2,000 digs for her career. Marie Dobrenz holds the school record with 2,480 career digs.

On Saturday, College of Charleston won its first match at Furman's Alley Gym since the 2009 SoCon championship by spoiling the Paladins' Senior Day in a five-set thriller.

Five players reached double digits in kills and five players reached double digits in digs as the Cougars needed all-around aggressive effort to down the inspired Paladins.

Darcy Dorton was the Cougars' kill leader with 19 kills and 11 digs. Sloane White tallied 13 kills with six of them, including match point, coming in the fifth set. Melissa Morello made 12 kills and 15 digs.

The Cougar middle blockers played well with Emily Neideffer hitting .409 with 13 kills and five blocks, while Kerstin Koehler tallied 10 kills and two blocks for a .588 hitting mark. Setter Taeler Davis assisted on 62 kills while also making 10 digs on the back row. Emily Shelton tallied 16 digs and Andi Zbojniewicz made 10 digs.

SERIES RECORDS
CofC swept The Citadel in the squad's first meeting earlier this year. The Cougars are 27-0 all-time versus the Bulldogs dating back to 1998. In the earlier meeting, CofC held the Bulldogs to just .040 hitting while notching a .301 hitting percentage themselves. Kerstin Koehler and Melissa Morello led the team with nine kills apiece.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
The Citadel continues to struggle mightily this season as the Bulldogs have yet to win a SoCon match. The Bulldogs have forced five sets against Davidson, Chattanooga, UNCG and Wofford but could not pull out victories.

Rachael Farrell leads the team with 2.32 kills per set while Lauren Hurt is the squad leader in blocks with 0.98 per set.

GUNNING FOR THE TOP SPOT
College of Charleston will need some help from its SoCon brethren in order to secure a SoCon South Division regular season title, the potential 12th consecutive regular season or tournament title for CofC volleyball.

If the Cougars defeat The Citadel and UNCG this week, then Georgia Southern will need to drop a match to either Davidson, Furman or Wofford this weekend. That would put the Eagles and Cougars in a tie for first place with the tiebreaker going to College of Charleston on the fourth league tiebreaker (percentage of sets won in head-to-head competition).

SHELTON GETS 2,000TH DIG
Senior Emily Shelton became just the 2nd player in CofC history to reach 2,000 digs for her career with 16 digs at Wofford on Nov. 2. Her 2,021 career digs is currently 2nd among active back row players in the Southern Conference, trailing only Chattanooga's Paula Passmore who has 2,308 career digs.

Shelton has averaged 4.15 digs per set over her career which also ranks second in school history.

DARCY DORTON LOOKING TO INK THE RECORD BOOKS
Penn State transfer Darcy Dorton has not only become a team leader, but she's also making her mark on the CofC record books. Dorton has posted 24 double-digit kill performances and has reached 20 kills on six occasions. She has also posted 13 double-doubles as she has averaged 2.77 digs per set.

Dorton is currently second in the Southern Conference with an average of 4.23 kills per set. Dorton ranks fourth in the all-time CofC records for average kills despite playing in the 25-point era.

CofC All-Time Kills Per Game In One Season

2. 4.66 - Alyson VanCleave (2000)
3. 4.25 - Suzanna Lowry (1991)
4. 4.23 - Darcy Dorton (2012)
5. 4.15 - Stephanie Ballard (2003)
