MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team got back on the right track this afternoon when they knocked off Southern Conference rival Davidson 4-3 at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
With the win the Cougars improve to 3-6 with a 1-2 record in the SoCon while the Wildcats fall to 8-4, 2-1 in the SoCon.
CofC started off well in doubles when the sophomore team of Alon Faiman (Ramat Hasharon, Israel) and Charlie Ghriskey (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) defeated Robert Lightbourn and Nicky Kunz of Davidson 8-6 on Court 3.
The South American duo of sophomore Sebastian Lopez (Medellin, Colombia) and junior Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile) followed suit with an 8-5 win over Kevin Moore and Chris Mark on Court 2 to clinch the doubles point for the College.
The Cougars took their momentum from the doubles win to the singles courts and kicked off with a quick 6-3, 6-2 win by Lesser over Lightbourn on Court 3.
Freshman Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.) chipped in a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Alex Howard of the Wildcats on Court 6.
Finally, on Court 4 Ghriskey battled back after dropping the first set 1-6 with two 7-5 set wins to take down Davidson's Chris Mark and clinch the overall win for the Cougars.
“It was great to get another win at home and improve to 2-0 here,” CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. “The guys have been working really hard the last couple weeks and have played some tough matches against ranked teams. Zack (Lewis), Charlie (Ghriskey) and Sebastian (Lopez) and Crescente (Lesser) in No. 2 doubles all stepped up today to get us a well-earned Southern Conference win.”
CofC will have a couple days of practice before the team continues SoCon play versus Furman on Thursday, March 14 at 3 p.m. (ET) at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
