CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team and head coach Linda Kalafatis have announced the 2015 signing class consisting of seven future Cougars who will look to make an immediate impact and continue to expand the program's success.
“The 2015 recruiting class to the College of Charleston has a little bit of everything,” said Kalafatis. “We have pitching, catching, infield, outfield, power, speed and good overall athleticism. These seven young women are serious about their academic careers and serious about helping our softball program continue to build toward championships.
“We were able to tap into our home state of South Carolina as well as get great talent regionally and nationally. The College of Charleston has so much to offer student-athletes who are interested in getting a great education and having a great athletic experience while living in a top ranked city next to terrific beaches. We're really proud to introduce and welcome our new team members.”
Charleston Softball 2015 Recruiting Class
BRITTANY VIOLETTE • Pitcher • Montclair, Calif. (Montclair HS)
Coach Kalafatis on Violette:
“Brittany is expected to come in right away pitch for us. She plays for So Cal A's, one of the top teams in the country and helped the 16U team win the PGF national championships last year. Brit has a number of ways she can get batters out and a high maturity level as a pitcher and that's what you really need to be successful at a high level. Brit's a great person to be around, she's a great teammate and she's a very good student with a 3.8 GPA and ranked in the top 10% of her class. We think Brit will have a terrific career at the College of Charleston.”
MADISON BROWN • Outfielder • Irmo, S.C. (Dutch Fork HS)
Coach Kalafatis on Brown:
“Madi is a terrific outfielder and we think she has all the qualities to be an excellent player for the Cougars. She gets a great jump on the ball, tracks it well, and has a strong arm. Madi bats from the left side of the plate so that will add depth and strengthen our line up. Madi, who plays for South Carolina Elite organization, was one of the first kids who really jumped out at us when we first got to CofC and her passion for the game stood out. She really blends in well for what we're looking for in our student-athletes.”
KAITLYN WAGERS • Catcher • Mauldin, S.C. (Mauldin HS)
Coach Kalafatis on Wagers:
“Kaitlyn is a catcher and she will have a great opportunity to play right away for us with the loss of two catchers to graduation after this year. She hit 12 homeruns last season in high school and I've seen her have the ability to hit the ball to all different areas of the field. She's caught high level pitchers and has played top level teams in her club ball career so she should transition quickly. She plays for 18U South Carolina Elite and is another player who hails from our home state of South Carolina. Kaitlyn is a good student and is ranked in the top 30 percent of her class.”
KATIE CHAPPELL • Utility • Blythewood, S.C. (Blythewood HS)
Coach Kalafatis on Chappell:
“Katie is a utility player and we've seen her play mostly second base and shortstop for her team. While that's also where we initially have her slated to help us, Katie's versatility may benefit our team in other positions as well. Katie made it very clear to us that CofC was her first choice and I think her high level of competition, playing for 18U South Carolina Elite, is a good fit for our program. She's excellent student with a 4.0 GPA and ranked in the top 15 percent of her class.”
KELLY SINCLAIR • Infielder • Marietta, Ga. (Lassiter HS)
Coach Kalafatis on Sinclair:
“Kelly was a highly recruited player who we believe has the ability to play in the infield for us as a freshman. Kelly has played and has experience at third, short and second which will be very valuable to us. She plays for the East Cobb Bullets, a top team out of Georgia who current players, Chandler Frisbie and Taylor DuPree played for. Kelly is very athletic with a good glove and strong arm. She's a very good contact hitter and seems to be gaining more power at the plate as she matures more as a ballplayer. Kelly wants to major in marine biology and is a very good student with a 3.8 GPA and class rank around the top 30 percent in her class.”
CANYON CROSBY • Pitcher/Infielder • Walterboro, S.C. (Colleton County)
Coach Kalafatis on Crosby:
“Canyon is a player who may play a few different places for us. We really like her offensive abilities and she has shown good pop from the left side of the plate. Canyon pitches, plays first and we may put her in the outfield too. Canyon's one of those gritty, competitive players who every coach wishes they had more of. She's an excellent student with over a 4.0 GPA and is ranked in the top five percent of her class.”
ISABEL McCLUSKEY • Outfielder • Irmo, S.C. (Dutch Fork HS
Coach Kalafatis on McCluskey:
“Izzy plays outfield and her ability as a hitter is what caught our attention. She has excellent bat speed and is a good base runner. Izzy's brother played football at The Citadel so she was familiar with Charleston and all its charm. She wants to be a doctor like her father and College of Charleston is well known as a place to prepare students for med school. Izzy is an excellent student with over a 4.0 GPA.”
