WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team put in another strong performance on Saturday, on the second and final day of the Seahawk Invitational, an annual meet hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
“We had a good meet this weekend,” said CofC head coach Amy Seago. “It's great to be outdoors with some nice weather and it's even greater to feel the atmosphere of the team coming together and feeding off of each other's energy. The girls were cheering each other on and prompting one another to step up and put their best effort forth for the team.”
Over the course of the two days, the Cougars set a total of 14 PR's, including freshman Julisa Tindall, who just one week removed from participating in the ECAC Championships, tied a school record in the high jump.
Also putting forth impressive performances for the Cougars were Christa Horrocks, who posted PR's in both the 200 and 400 meter dash, as well as Alex Coyle, threw a lifetime best mark in the hammer throw. Ten other Cougars posted personal bests, including: Bri McDonald (long jump), Ciera Holston (javelin), Lindsey Peterson (400m), Lexi Wilkins (shot put), Trish Rein (5K), Alexia Neal (400m hurdles), Carlee Cassidy (2K steeplechase), RoShani Glover (long jump), Alexa Chiarelli (400m) and Mary Kate Brelsford (5K).
Here is a quick look at the standout performances, both on the track and in the field:
On The Track!
Track Athlete of the Meet:
Christa Horrocks (Sr./ Glen Mills, Pa.)
Assistant coach Lauren Stewart on Horrocks performance…
“Christa and Lindsey (Peterson) both had outstanding races in the 400m today. They ran with so much heart, set lifetime personal records and scored points for the team. Christa followed her 400m effort with another lifetime PR in the 200m. She is a fierce competitor, as a sprinter needs to be, and should feel really good about how her outdoor season has kicked off.”
On The Field!
Athlete of the Meet:
Julisa Tindall (Fr. / Rock Hill, S.C.)
Assistant coach Lauren Stewart on Tindall's performance…
“Julisa had a big day-she tied our school record in the high jump with a collegiate PR of 1.75m (5'8.75”). She smoothed out her approach and stepped up the intensity of her take off. Julisa has established great momentum early in the outdoor season and I have no doubt she'll continue to build upon this momentum in the coming weeks.”
COACHES CORNER:
College of Charleston Head Coach Amy Seago:
On her team's overall performance…
“We have a lot of work to do between now and the CAA Championship, but the good news is that the momentum is moving in the right direction. We are showing we really believe in not only ourselves but in the team as a whole. When that type of effort and belief comes together, you have something really special. That's what we are working on building and we will use the time ahead of us to make the best of ourselves and our abilities.”
NEXT UP!
Next up for the Cougars is the Shamrock Invitational on Thursday, Mar. 20, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
