NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 64-ranked College of Charleston men's tennis team split its weekend road swing this past weekend, sweeping Hampton University, 7-0 on Saturday, before falling to the Monarchs of Old Dominion on Sunday, 4-3, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The Cougars are currently enjoying their second highest ITA-ranking in school history, having defeated two nationally-ranked teams this season in then No. 75 Presbyterian and No. 57 Iowa.
Heading in to the weekend, CofC (11-5) had won seven of their previous eight matches. Against Hampton (2-6) on Saturday, the Cougars made it eight of nine, sweeping the Pirates of Hampton University in convincing fashion, 7-0 at the Hampton Tennis Center.
The Cougars were dominant the entire way against Hampton, winning the doubles point through consecutive flight victories on courts two and three, 8-1, 8-1, before taking all six singles flights in straight sets to give CofC its eleventh win of the season. Claiming victory in singles for the Cougars were Brice Allanic (Colombes, France), Rodrigo Encinas (Santiago, Chile), Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile), Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.), Alon Faiman (Ramat Hasharon, Isreal) and Matt Daly (Raleigh, N.C.).
“We came out focused against Hampton,” said College of Charleston men's head tennis coach Jay Bruner.“ It was great to see Hunter Geddes and Brice (Allanic) clinch the doubles point and in singles Matt Daly really stepped up. I liked our momentum and our intensity.”
Against the Monarchs (12-5) on Sunday, the Cougars again won the doubles point, courtesy of the Cougar duos of Zack Lewis and Alon Faiman, as well as Crescente Lesser and Rodrigo Encinas, who both ousted their opposition on courts two and three, 8-5.
In singles play, No. 71-ranked Carlos Lopez-Villa quickly dismissed Brice Allanic on court one, 6-0, 6-0, before both teams traded matches on court six and four where Cougar junior Alon Faiman downed Abdoulaye Camara, 7-5, 6-2 and Monarch sophomore Jonas Kuwert defeated Charlie Ghriskey (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). Despite a three set victory for Encinas on court two, Old Dominion claimed victories on courts three and five to clinch the match.
“This trip was big for us in terms of getting ready for the CAA Tournament,” said Bruner. “We played well on both days, and raised our level of play in Sunday's match with ODU. You hope to compete well enough to have opportunities to win and we did that on every court. We are getting tougher and I think we learned a lot about ourselves with this trip.”
Next up for the Cougars is a Friday, March 28, home clash with UNC Charlotte, with doubles play set to begin at 3:00 p.m. Live streaming of the doubles point will be available via live stream at CofCSports.com
