Women?s Tennis Swings Past Former SoCon Foe Appalachian State, 5-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Under a cloudless blue sky and temperate rays, the College of Charleston women's tennis team downed their former Southern Conference rivals, Appalachian State, 5-2, at the CofC Tennis Complex on Sunday.

“It was nice to get back outside and in a competitive mode after a long spring break,” said College of Charleston director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “We have an intense stretch of matches coming up so of course it's nice to get a win. I feel really good about the way we played in doubles – it's something we've put a lot of emphasis on – so hopefully that will carry over in to these next few matches.”

The Cougars were indeed very strong in doubles, taking all three matches to quickly claim the point. Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield got things started on court one, dispatching of the Mountaineer duo of Wreder and LaSure, before the Cougar pairings of Mara Argyriou and Kelly Kambourelis as well as Samantha Maddox and Jamie Harrell downed their opposition, 8-2 and 8-3, respectively.

In singles, the Cougars jumped out to a hot start, with sophomore Brooke McAmis, extending the Cougar lead to 2-0, following her quick dismissal of LaSure. Then, closing out the match on courts three and six were Maddox and Falcone, who both won in straight sets to give the Cougars their fifth win of the season.

Scouting the Fighting Irish:

Notre Dame comes in to the match with a 5-6 overall record, but having faced one of the toughest schedules in the country. After starting the season 5-1 with wins over Indiana, Oklahoma State and Illinois amongst others, the Fighting Irish have dropped their last five against equally tough opposition, including most recent conquerors, Clemson. Having started the season ranked 21st in the ITA top-100 rankings, the Irish are now ranked 31st, just one spot behind Texas Tech, who defeated the Cougars in the first round of the NCAA Tournament just one year ago. The Irish are led on the court by Britney Sanders, last year's BIG EAST Player of the Year. Head Coach Jay Louderback is in his 29th season at the helm and boasts an overall record of 469-197 (.704), making him the winningest coach in program history.

Coaches Corner: College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo

On facing the Irish…

“Notre Dame is headed up by a legendary coach in Jay Louderback. It's an honor to have them here. They are a team who has been to the final four on numerous occasions and we're excited as a team to face some of the best competition in the country over the next few matches.”
