COLUMBIA, S.C. – In their final tune-up ahead of the CAA Championships, the College of Charleston track and field team extended its streak of impressive performances on Saturday, claiming five event victories under cloudy skies at the Gamecock Invitational.
Junior Hayley MacMahon laid down a collegiate best in the 800 meters while Tiffany Sisk and Kornelia Kostka won the shot put and the 3000 meter steeplechase, respectively. The Cougars' fourth victory came courtesy of the 4x400 relay team who – with a time of 4:04.80 – won by almost 14 seconds.
On the track, the Cougars were led by McMahon, who easily won the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.94. Joining in the plaudits was senior Christa Horrocks who finished fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.40, as well as Alexia Neal and Rachel Leder, who performed well in the 400 meter hurdles with times of 1:03.97 and 1:05.00, respectively.
The distance runners were also impressive on Saturday as Kornelia Kostka dominated the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:41.24. In the 5K, Danielle Sams and Casey Witkowski finished in second and third place with times of 18:33.26 and 18:53.54, while freshman Canadian Carlee Cassidy won the 1500 meters with a time of 4:49.70.
In the field, the Cougars were equally strong, led by Sisk's event victory in the shot put as well as Alex Coyle, who put together a good series in the discus, throwing 38.35 meters. In the hammer throw, the Cougar trio of Coyle, Sisk and Lexi Wilkins finished 2,3,4 with marks of 43.72, 40.81 and 39.89 meters. Christine Klinar also finished second in the javelin with a mark of 38.15 meters.
In the jumps, Julisa Tindall was once again strong, placing second in the high jump at 5'5”, while Roshani Glover finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.10 meters.
