SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Wofford in their final non-conference tuneup before the Colonial Athletic Association season at Snyder Field on Saturday afternoon.
The match was statistically even, but CofC conceded an early goal and was forced to change their focus and shape in pursuit of an equalizer. Wofford finally capitalized on CofC's commitment to offense with an insurance goal in the 79th minute.
“Today we came across a talented and motivated group in Wofford and I thought we could have performed better,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “We had good moments in the game and competed against a physical opponent, but in the end it wasn't enough. I believe we can put a better product on the field and we'll have that chance next weekend with our conference opener.”
Wofford's Matthew Aurednik scored both of the Terrier goals to bring his year-long total to five.
CofC produced 12 shot attempts in the match led by Nico Rittmeyer with five and Troy Peterson with three.
Goalkeeper Alex Young made his first start of the season and made five saves. Seven different Cougars played the full 90 minutes.
After a grueling out of conference slate, the Cougars will now shift their focus to the all-important CAA season with their first home appearance in six matches against Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff at Patriots Point is scheduled for 7 p.m.
