Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – The College of Charleston softball team wrapped up the Charleston Challenge at Patriots Point defeating the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 8-2. The Cougars won their third straight game in the tournament finale improving to 3-1 on opening weekend.
The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on back to back hits but Samantha Martin (2-0) quickly found her groove pitching five straight shut out innings, striking out five and working out of a bases loaded jam in the second.
“We have to find a way to a way to win even when we're not playing our A game, said Head Coach Linda Kalafatis. I thought we graded out at a C to start the game but I thought the players responded and showed some maturity after we made some adjustments after that first inning.”
The Cougars responded to the adversity when Katie Padilla scored from first on a double to left center from Allison Pedigo. Padilla led the fourth off with a double and tied the game up on an RBI single by Mackenzie Maples. CofC broke the tie in the fifth inning when Chandler Frisbie pulled a home run inside the left field foul pole taking the lead 3-2.
The Cougars busted the game wide open in the sixth inning when Rebecca Mueller tattooed a triple with the bases loaded plating three more runs. Mueller then scored on an RBI single by Valerie Cassell to increase the CofC lead to 8-2.
The College will be back in action Friday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Presbyterian at the South Carolina Tournament in Columbia, S.C.
