BUIES CREEK, N.C. – College of Charleston baseball powered past Campbell, 10-3, at Jim Perry Stadium on Tuesday night, snapping Campbell's 14-game winning streak which was the second longest active streak in the country.
Charleston's pitching staff didn't allow a walk, and the hitters sprung for double-digit hits for the fourth time in five games.
Righty Brandon Glazer earned the win for Charleston (11-6 overall). With a predetermined pitch cap of 45 pitches, Glazer went 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run and scattered three hits. The Camels led off each of his frames with a hit, but Glazer had his best stuff under pressure, holding the Camels to 0-for-10 with runners on base.
Each of the first four hitters in the Cougar lineup (Ryan Brown, Tommy Richter, Carl Wise, and Blake Butler) had multiple hits on the day, as did Morgan Phillips and Champ Rowland. Wise and Phillips combined for seven RBIs.
Wise, Butler, and Phillips all homered for the Cougars, who entered the game ranked seventh in the country in home runs per game.
“Overall, I'm very pleased with our efforts both offensively and defensively,” said head coach Monte Lee. I was impressed with our pitching staff; they threw the ball extremely well today. We only gave up one earned run, and didn't allow a walk which is big. We limited out free passes and threw strikes.
“I thought we did well offensively as well with production from a number of guys in our lineup. Carl Wise was big for us. He hit a two-strike, bases-clearing double which broke the game open for us, and then homered later, along with Blake Butler. I think those two guys worked really well in the middle of our lineup. Morgan Phillips too, he hit a big homer in the first inning with two outs, which gave us a big lead in the first inning.
“We executed well offensively and defensively and I'm very proud of our guys for beating a very good ball club.”
The Cougars wasted no time building a lead, with Brown leading off with a double as the first batter of the game and scoring on Richter's RBI single on the very next pitch. After a Wise walk, Phillips homered to the opposite field in right, sprouting a 4-0 lead in the first.
Cedric Mullins led off the bottom of the inning with a triple into the corner in right as Campbell sought an immediate response, but Glazer forced a pair of lazy flyouts to the right side of the infield and a grounder to shortstop to strand the runner at third.
The Camels managed a run in the third, however, when a two-base Cougar error put a runner in scoring position and allowed a run to score on groundball.
Carter Love replaced Glazer and effectively closed out the fourth inning, but found himself in a jam in the bottom of the fifth after a base hit and Cougar error put runners on second and third. A hit batsman loaded the bases, but Love forced a weak groundout to end the inning. The inning was prolonged by a 16-minute delay when the right field light tower malfunctioned.
The Cougars blew the game open in the top of the fifth, after Alex Pastorius led off with a walk, moved to second on an Erven Roper sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pastorius was called out at the plate trying to score on a groundball, but the resilient Cougars were not deflated. The College loaded the bases on a Brown single and Richter walk, and back-to-back doubles by Wise and Butler pushed the lead to 8-1.
Love went 2.1 scoreless innings and scattered four hits before handing the ball to Will Detwiler to start the seventh. Detwiler allowed two runs (one unearned) on two hits in the seventh, and Wade Arduini was perfect with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth.
Wise and Butler homered back-to-back in the top of the eighth inning, and Chase Henry came on to close it down in the bottom half.
The Cougars are now set to open Colonial Athletic Association play by playing host to Towson in a three-game series at Patriots Point. Game one is slated for Friday at 6 p.m.
