CHARLOTTE, N.C. – College of Charleston men's tennis came from behind in three singles matches to force third sets in addition to bringing the doubles competition down to match point, but fell short in snapping Charlotte's eight-match win streak in its 6-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Complex in Charlotte.
“We are making small fixes each match and getting close to a complete match,” CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said of his team's effort. “We are getting there inch by inch.”
Sophomore Rodrigo Encinas and junior Josh Record started the Cougars (11-8, 1-1 CAA) off on the right foot with their sixth straight win at No. 3 doubles, an 8-5 decision over Alex Calott and Paul Cisti. The 49ers (13-2) tied things up with an 8-3 victory on court one. Sophomore Vasily Kichigin and senior Charlie Ghriskey battled Charlotte's Colin Roller and Kasey Countee at the No. 2 spot in a tight match, eventually losing the tiebreak eight games to six.
The 49ers extended their lead with wins in the top two singles spots to lead the Cougars, 3-0. Junior Zack Lewis put CofC on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Calott on court five. Lewis has racked up a 12-4 record in 2015, winning four of his last five singles matches.
Ghriskey, Kichigin and junior Garrett Gordon all came back from first-set losses to win their second sets and force the 49ers into a third set. Gordon nearly overtook his opponent at the No. 6 position, pushing Cisti to a tiebreak in the third set and losing seven games to five.
College of Charleston returns home for its final match of the season at Patriots Point Tennis Center. The Cougars will host cross-town rival The Citadel at 3 pm on Apr. 1. Wednesday's match will mark the final home contest for seniors Brice Allanic, Alon Faiman and Charlie Ghriskey.
