CLEMSON, S.C. – College of Charleston men's tennis saw its four-match road win streak snapped on Sunday morning with a 7-0 loss to No. 52 Clemson.
Clemson (8-6) was on the prowl after suffering a 5-2 loss against ACC foe Georgia Tech on Friday. The Tigers swept the doubles point with wins in all three matches. CAA Men's Doubles Tennis Team of the Week Brice Allanic and Franz Sydow held their own on court one, trading games with top-seeded Hunter Harrington and Luke Johnson until the Tigers began to breakaway with a 5-4 lead, winning the final three games for an 8-4 victory.
On court three, junior Josh Record and sophomore Rodrigo Encinas were also able to hang with their opponents for a time, tying 2-2 early in the match and remaining within one game for much of the match before giving up the final three games for an 8-4 loss to Alejandro Augusto and Daffra Sanon.
The Cougars (8-4, 1-0 CAA) continued to show bright spots in singles, despite losing to the nationally ranked Tigers. After dropping the first set 6-1, junior Zack Lewis took a 2-1 lead in the second set at the No. 5 spot. When his opponent, Luke Johnson, got the upper hand with a 5-4 lead, Lewis was able to tie the match up at 5-5 before eventually yielding a 7-5 decision. Allanic also rebounded from a tough 6-0 loss in the first set against second-seeded Augusto to keep pace with his opponent, game for game, before Augusto won the final two games to claim a 7-5 win and the match.
On court six, junior Garrett Gordon battled it out with Christian Harris in the first set, tying up the score at 4-4. Although Harris ultimately won the match 6-4, 6-4, Gordon kept his opponent in the first set longer than any other Cougar.
Senior Charlie Ghriskey was the only one to win a set against the Tigers, bouncing back from a 6-2 loss in the first set at the No. 3 spot to earn a 6-4 triumph in the second set. Ghriskey's opponent, Sanon, won a third set tiebreak 1-0 to complete the sweep for the Tigers.
Charleston will travel an hour northeast to Spartanburg for a 3 pm matchup against Spartanburg Methodist this afternoon.
