CHARLESTON, S.C. – Eighty-eight current and former student-athletes and 18 members of athletic department support groups participated in three May Commencement ceremonies held at the College of Charleston on Friday and Saturday on The Cistern Yard.
A tradition unlike many other colleges and universities, CofC students who complete their undergraduate degrees do not wear robes or caps for the spring commencement ceremony. Instead, women don white dresses and men wear white dinner jackets.
For decades, this annual tradition has taken place in front of The College's oldest building, Randolph Hall, with ancient live oak trees draped with Spanish moss setting the stage.
This year's scholars included marine biology, international business, Spanish, studio art, finance, sociology, psychology, anthropology, chemistry, geology, accounting and elementary education majors.
The diverse group also hailed from 25 different states as far out west as Washington state to the salt lakes of Utah to the deserts of Arizona to the bayou of Louisiana as well as five countries that included The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, France, Ivory Coast and The Bahamas.
Nineteen student-athletes in the Class of 2015 graduated with honors including 2014 J. Stewart Walker Cup Co-Award recipient Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) of sailing, who graduated at the top of her class, summa cum laude, with a 3.9-or-better grade-point average. The double major in history and African American Studies will attend Tulane Law School in the fall.
Cooper was one of eight CofC Honors College graduates along with Olivia Coco (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) of equestrian, who graduated magna cum laude in economics.
Annie Berdusco (Bradenton, Fla.) of women's swimming and diving, Timmy Crann (Blairstown, N.J.) of offshore sailing and athletic training, Mauri Harrison (San Diego, Calif.) of women's soccer and Trish Rein (Philadelphia, Pa.) also graduated magna cum laude (3.750-3.899 GPA).
Mary Frances Babrowicz (Spartanburg, S.C.) of women's swimming and diving graduated cum laude (3.500-3.749 GPA) followed by Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) of sailing, C.C. Buford (San Antonio, Texas) of women's golf, Nicole DeMarco (Shelton, Conn.) of women's swimming and diving, Lorna Doucette (Fletcher, N.C.) of women's track & field, Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) of women's tennis, Malka Fox-Epstein (Rochester, N.Y.) of equestrian, Jayme Groth (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) of women's swimming and diving, Erin Hall (Norcross, Ga.) of women's basketball, Alyssa Johnson (Mobile, Ala.) of equestrian, Kate Kohl (Wayne, Ill.) of equestrian, Madison Tarleton (Greenville, S.C.) of women's swimming and diving and Catey Warren (Charleston, S.C.) of volleyball.
Former baseball all-conference standout Brandon Murray (Nassau, Bahamas) and 2014 All-CAA Second Team selection Cara Howley (McKinney, Texas) completed graduate coursework for their master of business administration and master of arts in communication, respectively.
All benefited from the academic support and guidance from the CofC Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) staff headed up by director Keith Merritt II, learning specialist and academic advisor Kate Tiller and academic advisor and coordinator of student-athlete affairs Kristin Rusboldt.
The majority of CofC's graduating student-athletes have also benefited from scholarship funding throughout their academic and athletic careers provided by The Cougar Club, the athletic department's fundraising arm. If you would like to become a member to help continue to support student-athlete scholarships, please contact Michele Wolfert at (843) 953-8255.
