Cougars in for Tough Mid-Season Test vs. No. 8 UNC
10/17/2016 4:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (3-6-2; 1-2-2 vs. CAA) is in line for its most challenging test of the season Tuesday, when they'll look to defend Patriots Point against the No. 8 North Carolina Tar Heels (10-2-1) at 7 p.m.
The last time the Cougars took the field at home, it was also against a team receiving national attention in the form of the (RV) UNCW Seahawks. CofC controlled the pace through the first 60 minutes, and ultimately struck first when Nicolas Jeausseran scored in the 59th minute. UNCW managed to even things up and force overtime, but the Cougars nonetheless managed to secure the tie against a formidable Seahawks team.
The College is no stranger to top-tier teams this season, as Tuesday will mark the fifth time the Cougars have faced a team receiving love in the NSCAA Coaches poll. Last season, the Cougars also faced off with the Tar Heels, that time up in Chapel Hill. The two teams traded goals, with Nico Rittmeyer and Jake Nelson getting on the scoreboard for CofC, but UNC escaped with the 3-2 victory, scoring with 30 seconds to play in regulation.
North Carolina enjoys strong offensive production from much of its roster, and has four players with at least 12 points on the season. Zach Wright (5g, 6a) is a balanced threat in both the scoring and passing game, while Nils Bruening is a pure goal scorer with a team-high seven on the season. In frame, James Pyle has been solid with a relatively light workload. Only being called on to make 29 saves this season, he has seven shutouts and a .806 save percentage.
