KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Meerbusch, Germany) and senior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) each carded an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round to finish tied for third, and pace the College of Charleston women's golf team to a third-place performance at the 2016 Palmetto Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course.
"This was a great way to end the fall [season]," said head coach Jamie Futrell. "We almost got there late in the round. I'm very pleased with a third-place finish, and I think it speaks volumes heading into the spring."
Rottluff teed off on the fourth hole with Tuesday's shotgun start, and quickly carded birdies on the seventh and eighth holes to walk to the ninth tee tied for the lead at two under par. After going out in 40 (+4) on the back nine, Rottluff rebounded with birdies on the first and third holes to finish even par for the day and the tournament with a three-day total of 77 + 67 + 72 = 216.
Rotluff's second-round 67 set the course record for CofC, and tied the lowest round in program history. She also finished the tournament two-under-par on the par 4's – the only player to break into the red in par four scoring for the week.
Fuenfstueck finished even par of the day as well, carding three birdies on the back nine and three bogeys on the front. For the tournament, Fuenfstueck carded a three-day total of 70 + 74 + 72 = 216 to finish in a three-way tie for third with Rottluff and Boston University's Adela Cejnarova.
Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden) and Mary Fran Hillow (Orlando, Fla.) finished tied for 31st and 37th, respectively, as Hillow put together a final round of 74 for a three-day total of 79 + 74 + 74 = 227 (+11). Garton finished with a three-day total of 75 + 72 + 79 = 226 (+10), while Vici Drechsler (Munich, Germany) capped the week with a tournament total of 77 + 74 + 80 = 231 (+15).
Campbell took home the team trophy with a tremendous push in the final round, recording the lowest combined score of the day (293) as Coastal Carolina failed to hold onto its 36-houl lead with a final round of 304. The Camels finished the tournament with a three-day total of 300 + 286 + 293 = 879 (+15), edging the Chanticleers (292 + 285 + 304 = 881, +17) by two strokes.
The College of Charleston finished third with a three-day total of 299 + 287 + 297 = 883 (+19) after carding the second-lowest round of the day Tuesday. The Cougars beat out fourth-place University of Mississippi's three-day total of 290 + 293 + 305 = 888 (+24) by five shots, as Kennesaw State finished fifth with a final total of 299 + 298 + 297 = 894 (+30).
Mississippi's Katy Harris claimed the individual tournament title with a three-day total of 73 + 70 + 69 = 212 (-4), edging out Coastal Carolina's Malene Krolboll Hansen (73 + 69 + 71 = 213) by one shot.
The College will open the 2017 spring season at the Central District Invitational on Feb. 20 and 21 at the St. Lucie Trail Golf Club at PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
