MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team opened its doors to Appalachian State on Sunday, and defeated the Mountaineers, 5-2.
The Cougars (6-3) entered the match coming off a tough loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday, and looked to have their hands full with an Appalachian State (6-4) team that had won their last four matches.
Josh Record and Vasily Kichigin were the deciding factor in the doubles competition, as they clinched the point the in the No. 3 doubles flight, 7-6. That win was their fifth of the season as a pair. The No. 1 doubles tandem Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas secured their doubles match, 6-3, helping The College earn the doubles point.
In the singles competition, Estevarena continued his winning ways, earning his seventh singles win of the season in the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-3. The No. 3, 4 and 5 singles matches each were wins for the Cougars as well, giving the College four of the six matches, and the win over the Mountaineers.
The College will take a few days to rest, prepare and then travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for their next game, a Sunday match up against Florida Atlantic on March 6.
