DAVIDSON, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team traveled to Davidson and came away with a hard-fought win, 4-3, over the Wildcats on Sunday.
The Cougars (15-6) had won their previous match in North Carolina as well, as they overtook Elon, 4-3, and came into this match looking for another win as the regular season winds down. Davidson (11-9) had won seven of its last nine entering Sunday, but could not overcome CofC.
The College took the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 spot by Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas, 6-4, and in the No. 3 spot by Charlie Ghriskey and Zack Lewis, 6-3. This win by Encinas and Estevarena was their 15th as a tandem this season.
In the singles competition, things got a bit more interesting, as Davidson managed to secure wins in the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 matches, but The College would not be denied. Zack Lewis won the No. 4 flight, 6-3, 6-1; Vasily Kichigin took the No. 5 flight, 6-2, 6-2; and Estevarena secured a win in the No. 1 flight, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, to push the match in Charleston's favor.
The College has one match left in the 2016 regular season. The Cougars are scheduled to play UNC Charlotte on Saturday, April 16 on their home court at Patriots Point. That match is set to start at noon.
