MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Bailey Ober recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts, but it was not enough as College of Charleston fell to Northeastern, 3-2, on Friday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (25-23-1, 8-11 CAA) were able to get the tying run to third and the winning run to second with two outs in the ninth but were unable to score. Ober (5-4) earned his first career complete-game allowing three runs on 11 hits and walking none.
Northeastern (27-22, 10-8) opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double by Zach Perry. Charleston tied the game in the bottom half when Bradley Jones lashed a single to center. An error allowed Dupree Hart to score from first and knot the game at 1-all. The Huskies reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Jake Farrell and added what proved to be the game-winner in the fifth on a two-out RBI single.
Erven Roper closed the gap to 3-2 with a solo blast to right, his fourth home run of the season. Hart, Jones, Roper and Bradley Dixon finished with two hits each.
College of Charleston and Northeastern play game two of the series on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
