CHARLESTON, S.C. - Having passed the halfway point of the regular season riding the program's second-longest winning streak in school history, the College of Charleston women's soccer team (7-3) will begin conference play on Sunday when the UNCW Seahawks (6-2-1) come to Patriots Point for a 1 p.m. showdown.
The College has strung together seven wins in a row dating back nearly a full month, their last loss coming on August 26. Over that span, the Cougars have outscored opponents 16-1, and have out-shot them 150-55. Laura Ortega (4g, 4a) and Jessica Schifer (5g, 1a) have been a potent 1-2 punch on the offensive end for CofC, while Meredith Tunney and Tracey Webster have held things down in the defensive end and midfield with over 1500 combined minutes between the two of them this season. Lauren Killian has been lights out for the Cougars in goal with four solo shutouts, a 0.72 GAA and a .837 save percentage.
Though the Cougars and Seahawks only became conference rivals a few years ago, the rivalry spans back to 1994. UNCW carries the all-time advantage with a 8-3 mark against the Cougars, however the last time they played at Patriots Point in 2014, the College emerged with the 1-0 victory. Taylor Cardamone scored for the Cougars in that one on an assist from Hannah Huizenga in the 14th minute.
UNCW started the season undefeated in their first five games with a dominant 4-0-1 record. Since then, they've split their last four matches by picking up wins over Furman and North Dakota State, but dropping games to N.C. State and George Mason. The Seahawks were originally scheduled to play East Carolina on Thursday, but because that game was rained out, the Seahawks enter Sunday's action on seven days rest like the Cougars. UNCW's scoring leader Nikki Cox (6g) hasn't played since late August, leaving the offensive load to Serenity Waters (5g, 6a). In goal, senior keeper Carolyn Huddy has logged a 4-2-1 record by way of a 1.01 GAA and a .708 save percentage.
