MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (7-3-1) kicked off its conference season by matching the UNCW Seahawks (6-2-2) stride for stride in a 0-0 tie Sunday, extending their undefeated-streak to eight games in the process.
• Lauren Killian turned in a heroic performance in frame, racking up a season-high eight saves. Killian robbed UNCW's Serenity Waters in the second half on a diving denial, and later on in the second overtime, managed to prevent a header opportunity that hung around the goal line before Killian scooped it up. She has now recorded five solo shutouts on the year and sports a save percentage of .863.
• The Cougars had a couple of opportunities to win the game, but none more-so than Laura Ortega's breakaway chance in the 18th minute. The Spaniard had UNCW's Carolyn Huddy dead to rights, but after beating the keeper on the shot, the ball careened off the post and out.
• Though UNCW had the slight edge in the game, virtually every statistical category was very close. The Seahawks led in shots (16-12) and shots on goal (8-6), while the Cougars had the edge in fouls (13-11). Hannah Huizenga played all 110 minutes of the game.
• With the tie, the Cougars' unbeaten streak extends to eight games, which is the second-longest in school history. The only other spree that lasted longer came in 2004, when the Cougars cobbled together nine games (eight wins and a tie).
"It was a battle between two really good teams who had great starts to the season," head coach Christian Michner said. "We knew UNCW was going to be a difficult test, so it's big to get points off of them however we can. Our aim was certainly three points today, and we had some good chances to do it, but then again we gave away a couple chances where we could have walked away with nothing. I'm happy with our effort today."
"Lauren Killian is fantastic, and she's the reason we've gone without a loss for eight games," Michner said. "She gives us so much confidence with how steady she is, and we're lucky to have a keeper back there who can do that for us. I'm happy to keep another clean sheet."
The Cougars will return to action Friday evening, when they will remain at home to host the Hofstra Pride (6-4-1) on Friday, at 7 p.m.
