PHILADELPHIA - The College of Charleston women's soccer team (8-6-1; 3-3-1) withstood an offensive barrage from Drexel (10-5-1; 5-5-1) for a full 90 minutes on Sunday, but a Dragons goal early in the overtime period sunk the Cougars' chances at earning a first round bye in the CAA Tournament.
- It was senior Imani Walker who stepped up to be the hero for Drexel in the 92nd minute, poking in a flying side-touch off of a feed from Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausboll to lift the Dragons to the win on their senior day.
- The Cougars survived being outshot 11-3 in the first half and 19-9 through regulation, with some big plays out of
Genevieve Henderson (7 saves) and the defensive corps. Perhaps the biggest defensive play of the game came late in the second half, when Drexel's Vanessa Kara received the ball for a breakaway chance, only for
Rio Speller-Drews to chase her down and break up the opportunity before it materialized.
-
Rachel Kim had the best chances on offense for the Cougars. In the first half, she managed a front kick off a rebound that sailed just high of the crossbar. Later in the second half, she got a head on a beautiful cross, but Christiana Ogunsami was there to dive on it and prevent the rebound chance.
- Despite the loss, the Cougars stand pat at No. 4 in the CAA standings. They still have the opportunity to potentially move up to third place depending on how Northeastern finishes out the year. With Hofstra's win over Elon, the semifinals and finals of the CAA Tournament are now guaranteed to be played in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Cougars will remain on the road to take on UNCW (5-10-2; 1-5-1) this Thursday at 7 p.m.
