CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 21st edition of the Pinehurst Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston gets underway on Oct. 9-10 at the historic Pinehurst Resort and its par-72 No. 1 course in Pinehurst, N.C.
Known as the Cradle of American Golf, 100 college women's golfers will compete at Pinehurst, which has hosted more championships than any other club in the country including the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open on its famous No. 2 course.
The 19-team tournament field includes host CofC, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Elon, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Maryland, Nebraska, North Florida, Old Dominion, Presbyterian, Samford, Towson, UNCG, UAB and William & Mary.
Since 1998, CofC has hosted the Pinehurst Challenge. Up until the last three years, the tournament was held annually in the spring. The No. 1, which is the oldest course at Pinehurst, will play at 5,974 yards.
Last year, schools battled the elements and playing conditions produced by Hurricane Matthew. East Carolina won the team title with a three-round score of 861 (-3), while Auburn was runner-up (+4) and Maryland third (+17).
The Cougars will start sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.), who was the team's top finisher at their last tournament – the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Vail, Colo. She is joined in the lineup by senior Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden), junior Anna Buchanan (Athens, Ga.), sophomore Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany) and freshman Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany). Freshman Chloe Currie (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) will compete as an individual.
"We look forward to being back at Pinehurst," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "Historically, this has been a great place for us. The team has looked good in practice this week and we look forward to a good finish."
The Cougars will be paired with ECU, Nebraska and Elon during Monday's first and second rounds, while will be 36 holes of continuous play beginning with an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start. Tuesday's final round will also be an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start. Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
