Fast Start Surges Cougars Past Redbirds

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (8-4) got off to a fast 3-0 start Tuesday against the Illinois State Redbirds (5-11), and rode that momentum to the eventual 5-2 victory.
CofC and ISU traded doubles matches on courts two and three, which left an epic showdown between the Cougars' Juan Estevarena and Vasily Kichigin and the Redbirds' Urh Krajnc Domiter and Matias Chomali to decide the point. The Cougars went up in the match, but Illinois State hung around to force the tiebreaker. CofC had to go deep into the bonus round to come away with the 7-6(7) win to secure the point.
In singles, Alec Angradi was the first man off in flight six, dispatching Peter Foersom 6-0, 6-2. Juan Estevarena finished shortly thereafter in flight one, beating Krajnc 6-4, 6-1 to put the College up 3-0.
The Redbirds struck back in the middle flights, as Kichigin (7-6(4), 6-4) and Ryan Khan (6-2, 6-2) fell to allow ISU to make the score 3-2.
That left Benedikt Henning and Rodrigo Encinas in flights 2 and 5, who both took their opponents to three sets. Henning got the match-clincher when he eliminated Dylan Steffens 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Encinas finished shortly thereafter, beating Egehan Sertkava 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
The Cougars will now hit the road for their first CAA match of the season, and will take on Elon at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
