MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (10-4) impressed in its second consecutive double-header Saturday, as the Cougars defeated Charlotte (9-6) 4-1 before sweeping past SC State (2-8) 7-0.
 
The Cougars seized the doubles point from Charlotte with a 6-3 win on court one and a 6-4 victory on court two. The College looked poised to take the third flight as well, as Sarah Zschunke and Sarah Jane Jones fought back from a 1-4 deficit to go up 5-4 before play finished.
 
Singles was hotly contested, with Charlotte capturing the early momentum with four first-set victories. Liza Fieldsend was the first player finished, coming back in three sets to eliminate Victoria Pahlett 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 to put the College up 2-0.
 
The 49ers got one back in flight four to make it 2-1, but Christi Woodson replicated Fieldsend's feat, coming back to knock off Tai Martin (0-6, 6-2, 6-0) in three sets. Shortly thereafter, Mara Argyriou clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Alexandra Lee in the third flight. Turner Yates was moments away from victory, but the cessation of play left her stranded 7-6(6), 5-2 on court six.
 
Yates found redemption against SC State, and was the first Cougar finished with singles play after a 6-0, 6-1 win on court five. Fieldsend was the next player through with a 6-3, 6-1 win in flight one, and Jones clinched the win on court six with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Carla Pretreanu.
 
Though the match was decided, that didn't stop Woodson (6-2, 6-2), Argyriou (6-1, 6-4) and Anastasia Palaska (6-4, 7-5) from triumphing as well to complete the 7-0 sweep.
 
The Cougars will have the next two days off before hosting the Marshall Thundering Herd (8-6) on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
