JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – College of Charleston senior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) finished runner-up shooting 4-under par at the two-day Briar's Creek Invitational held at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
Maria Torres of Florida, ranked No. 12 nationally, won individual medalist honors with a final-round 69 to seal the three-stroke victory (-7) over Fuenfstueck, who shot rounds of 68, 69 and 75. It marked her fifth Top-5 finish this season having placed third-or-better in each of those five starts for the Cougars.
Annelie Sjoholm of Campbell, No. 13-ranked Kelly Grassel of Florida, No. 38-ranked Dewi Weber of Miami and Olivia Cason of Louisville also shot in the 70s during the final round and tied for third (-3).
For the tournament, Fuenfstueck was second in most pars made (40) and led in par-3 scoring. Her first-round 68 was the second-lowest round behind Torres' first-round 66 – one of 12 Top-100 ranked players in the 93-player field.
"It was an amazing tournament for Laura (Fuenfstueck) and congrats to her," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "She just couldn't get stuff to fall today. With this field, to finish second is an outstanding accomplishment for her. It was a continuation of the great spring season she is having as a senior."
No. 6-ranked Florida won the team title for the third year in a row carding a new tournament-low 54-hole total of 849 (-15). The Gators were one of 10 Top-50 ranked teams in the tournament field.
With only four starters in the lineup on the final day of play, CofC placed 15th overall with a three-round score of 900 (+36). Graduate senior Mary Fran Hillow (Orlando, Fla.) withdrew before the round due to illness.
"Obviously, we weren't necessarily pleased with our finish," Futrell said. "With everything that happened this week with a couple of our starters out again, I was really proud of how we went out and played. It was a tough situation to be put into. We actually played pretty well considering playing without our starters due to illness."
The Cougars will look to regroup before traveling to compete at the Bryan National Intercollegiate on March 31-April 2 at The Champions Course at Bryan Park in Browns Summit, N.C.
"Hopefully, we can get some people well and be at full strength at that tournament," Futrell said. "It will be a quick turnaround for us. We just have to get well before we get to conference (tournament)."
