Kichigin Cleanses Holy City of Blue Demons, Raises CofC to 10-5

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Cougars and Blue Demons (11-8) played to a 3-3 deadlock, and it was junior Vasily Kichigin that stepped up as the hero for the College of Charleston men's tennis team (10-5) with a come-from-behind win in the third flight to lift CofC to its tenth win of the season.
The College got off to a tumultuous start in doubles play, allowing DePaul to score wins in the second and third flights to capture the point. Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas put on an admirable display in the top flight, leading 5-4 before the point was decided.
After suffering a setback on court five in singles play, Estevarena responded to get the Cougars on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the top flight over Nathan de Veer. Several minutes later, Benedikt Henning tied the match up at 2-2 when he defeated Alex Galoustian 6-4, 6-3.
Flight four and flight six ended within moments of one another, with Alec Angradi prevailing 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3 over Fran Tonejc and Encinas succumbing 7-5, 7-6(5) to Boris Spanjaard.
That left the third flight, where the match hinged on Kichigin's showdown with Tim Corwin. Corwin had won the opening set 6-3, and Kichigin responded with a 6-3 win in set two in turn. The two traded blows in the third set all the way to 5-4, but the Russian pulled away late to seal the match with the 6-4 win.
The Cougars will remain at home this weekend, and will face off with former SoCON rival Davidson on Saturday at 1 p.m.
