Cougars Have Midas Touch in 6-1 Win Over Golden Eagles

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (17-8) scored a 6-1 win for the second time in as many days Thursday, defeating the Marquette Golden Eagles (12-6) at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Cougars won the doubles point by way of wins on courts two and three. Christi Woodson and Turner Yates knotted things up with a 6-2 win in the third flight, and Mara Argyriou and Helena Nyikos wrapped up the point thanks to a 6-4 win in flight two.
CofC won five of its six opening sets, and that would be indicative of how the match on the whole would finish. Woodson was the first won finished, winning 6-4, 6-1 on court three against Fleur Eggink, Marquette's winningest singles player on the season.
For 30 minutes, the match remained 2-0, but then all at once, four matches went final within a minute of each other. Yates won 6-3, 6-3 on court six, Nyikos' six-match winning streak came to an end in flight four, Argyriou prevailed 6-3, 6-3 on court two, and Rachel McNeely was the 6-4, 6-2 victor on court five.
With the match decided by way of a 5-1 Cougar lead, all eyes shifted to Liza Fieldsend and Silvia Ambrosio, who were locked in a three-set slugfest on court one. The two traded 6-3 sets, setting up a tiebreak in set three. Fieldsend trailed early, but fought her way back and ultimately won 7-6(6).
"After seeing all my teammates around me play so well, it really inspired me to raise my game and get a win of my own," Fieldsend said. "We've been working so hard all season, I always want to go out and do my best for them."
The Cougars will finish up the regular season Friday morning against the UNCW Seahawks (9-6) at home for senior day.
