MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (18-8) won its fourth straight match to close out the regular season on Friday, playing a strong batch of singles matches to hand the UNCW Seahawks (9-7) the 5-2 defeat.
Mara Argyriou pushed her collegiate win total to 110 when she and Helena Nyikos pulled off the 6-4 win on court two against Annika Sillanpaa and Alix Theodossiou. Unfortunately, UNCW won in flights 1 and 3 to take the point.
The Cougars responded in mighty fashion from their upper flight singles matches. Christy Woodson was the first player finished for the second match in a row, dispatching Theodossiou 6-1, 6-3 to tie the match at 1-1.
Argyriou was the next one to grab a win, eliminating Sillanpaa 6-0, 7-5 to earn her 111th career win. Fellow senior Liza Fieldsend followed suit in the top flight, handing Madara Straume just her third loss of the season by way of a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
Rachel McNeely went down swinging in three sets in flight five as the Seahawks reduced the gap to 3-2. However, Nyikos stepped up as the hero for the Cougars, defeating Xandra Fougner 7-6(3), 7-5 to seal the win. Though the overallmatch was decided, Turner Yates and Celeste Matute completed an absolute war on court six, with Yates edging out the 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-5 victory.
With the regular season concluded, the Cougars now await the announcement of pairings for the CAA Tournament, which will be released on Monday. The Tournament will take place on April 21-23 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
