CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team will dabble in a bit of ornithology this week, as they'll close out the regular season against the Georgia Southern Eagles (10-10), the Marquette Golden Eagles (12-5), and the UNCW Seahawks (8-6).
The Cougars will travel to Statesboro on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. road showdown with GS, before returning to the Lowcountry for matches with Marquette on Thursday at 2 p.m. and UNCW on Friday at 11 a.m. for senior day.
CofC split their matches last weekend, falling 5-2 to Elon before rallying back for a 4-3 win against James Madison. Mara Argyriou was named CAA Co-Player of the Week in recognition of her strong play dating back to the win against Newberry. The senior has been a dominant force in upper flight singles play, and has just one loss in her last 13 matches.
Georgia Southern started the season very strongly in 2017, but things fell apart at around the midway point of the year as the Eagles have lost eight of their last nine as well as their last three straight. Their most recent match came on the road in the form of a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Appalachian State. Emilia Bujan was the standout for GS in that one, winning 6-4, 6-3 in flight three singles. The Cougars are 22-3 all-time against the Eagles, and have won the past 18 consecutive encounters dating back to 2001.
Marquette is 12-5 on the season, and their match with the Cougars will mark game eight of a nine-game road-trip. The Golden Eagles have won their last four straight, with victories over Butler, Indiana, Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha. Fleur Eggink boasts the best singles record on the team at 14-2, playing primarily in the fourth flight. The Cougars will play Marquette for the first time on record.
The Cougars close out the regular season against UNCW in a match that will have significant ramifications for CAA Tournament seeding purposes. Prior to the match, CofC will pay homage to Argyriou and Liza Fieldsend, the team's two season's as they play their final home match of their collegiate careers.
The Seahawks currently ride a two-match winning streak against Towson and Drexel, and will play a Wednesday home-match against NC Central before taking on the College. Madara Straume has been the team's ace in top flight singles play, sporting a team-best 12-2 mark. She is also 10-2 in doubles play when playing alongside Sabrina Barisano. The Cougars beat UNCW twice last year in both the regular season and CAA Tournament, and own a 14-3 all-time mark against the Seahawks dating back to 1993.
Live stats will be available for all CofC home tennis matches.
