ELON, N.C. – Despite a spirited comeback effort, the College of Charleston men's tennis team (14-8) couldn't quite reach the promised land against No. 1 seed UNCW (13-8), falling 4-2 in the CAA Semifinals.
The two teams opened things up battling over a hotly contested doubles point. The Seahawks came out firing on court two, where they earned a 6-1 victory.
Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas responded with a 6-3 victory on court one, setting up a decisive flight three showdown between Vasily Kichigin and Bendikt Henning of CofC and Gabe Hocevar and Michael Copeland of UNCW. The Cougars got out to a 6-5 lead, but UNCW fought back, forced a tiebreak and prevailed 7-6(3) to capture the point.
UNCW carried the momentum over to singles play, scoring the first win of the day on court six to go up 2-0. The Seahawks put the Cougars on the 3-0 brink not long after, winning 6-1, 6-4 on court four.
The Cougars got a spark of life in the first flight, where Estevarena battled past Andres Torres for the 6-4, 6-4 win. Not long afterword, Henning secured a 7-5, 6-2 win in the second flight, and suddenly it was a 3-2 contest.
That left a pair of third sets to decide the day. Vasily Kichigin had won 7-6(5) on court five, and was only down 2-0 in the third, but that never came to fruition, as Fernando Ramirez Lascurian surrendered the winning point by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
The Seahawks will go on to face William & Mary in the CAA Championship on Sunday.
