ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (14-8) couldn't fight its way out of a 3-0 hole on Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, falling to the Elon Phoenix (15-7) 5-2.
Elon captured the doubles point despite Christi Woodson and Turner Yates securing a 7-5 win on court three. With doubles locked up 1-1, Mara Argyriou and Anastasia Palaska fell 7-5 in the second flight.
The Cougars surrendered two more points in singles play to go down 3-0 before Mara Argyriou put the College on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the third flight over Suzanne Zenoni. However, that couldn't stem the tide, as the Phoenix won the next two points to go up 5-1 and seal the match.
Court six was the final one to finish, where Helena Nyikos played her first match after missing the past month to pull off a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sofia Edo.
The Cougars return to action Sunday against the James Madison Dukes.
