Cougars Prevail 4-3, Hand Dukes First Home-Loss of 2017
4/9/2017 4:21:00 PM | Women's Tennis
HARRISONBURG, VA. – Christi Woodson came back from a big deficit in third flight singles play to pick up a win in her match, and in doing so, lifted the College of Charleston women's tennis team (15-8) to a 4-3 victory over the James Madison Dukes (15-6) at Hillside Courts.

The Cougars altered their doubles lineups for the encounter, shifting Mara Argyriou and Anastasia Palaska to the top flight, pairing Rachel McNeely with Woodson in flight two, and combining Liza Fieldsend and Sarah Zschunke in flight three. Argyriou and Palaska pulled off a 6-4 win, but it wasn't enough to prevent JMU from capturing the point on the other two courts.

The College rebounded in singles play, starting with Argyriou in the second flight earning a 6-0, 6-3 win over Emma Peterson. Turner Yates put CofC up in the match shortly thereafter when she knocked off Rebecca Harris 6-2, 7-5.

Helena Nyikos put the Dukes on the brink in the fourth flight with a 6-4, 6-3 win, but JMU wouldn't go down quietly, capturing wins by way of tiebreaks on courts one and five to knot the match up at 3-3.

That left flight three, where Woodson squared off with Kimmy Herrock with the fate of the overall match at stake. Woodson staved off a 4-0 deficit in the opening set to storm back for a 7-6(1) victory. Herrock got one back in the second with a 6-4 win, but Woodson prevailed as the hero for the Cougars with a 6-4 win in set three, coming back from 4-2 down.

The win gives the Cougars their second victory against a CAA opponent this season, and moves them to 4-1 all-time against the Dukes. For James Madison, it was their first home defeat all season long. The College has one more road match scheduled for the regular season, a Wednesday encounter with the Eagles of Georgia Southern.
