Cougars Look Regal in Win Over Eagles

STATESBORO, GA. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team won its final road match of the regular season on Wednesday, pulling away from the Georgia Southern Eagles (10-11) by a score of 6-1.

The two teams played to a 1-1 split in doubles play, laying the fate of the point on court two where Rachel McNeely and Christi Woodson faced off with Mariana Ranzahuer and Lindsay Truscott. It was a hotly contested affair, but the Cougar duo pulled away for the 6-4 win to put the College up 1-0.

The Eagles came back to tie things up at the onset of singles play, but that would be the last time GS would get on the board. Mara Argyriou won her second consecutive second flight match of the season by a score of 6-3, 6-2, and Helena Nyikos won her third match since returning from injury with a 6-4, 6-3 win in flight four.

Liza Fieldsend and Giulia Riepe played to a tiebreak in the opening set of flight one play, but Fieldsend persevered for the 7-6(4) win. That seemed to crush the spirit of her opponent, as the CofC senior plowed forward for a 6-0 win in the second set to seal the match.

Woodson and Turner Yates both played to three-sets, but with the match decided they went to super tiebreaks to settle things. Yates battled to the 7-5 win in the opening set, fell 6-3 in the second set, and then pulled away for the 10-4 third set victory. Woodson meanwhile had a battle on her hands against Emilia Bujan. After Woodson grinded out the 7-5 win in the first set, Bujan forced a second set tiebreak and prevailed 7-6(4). Woodson turned around to rebound for the 10-7 win in the third.

The win improves the College to 16-8 on the season. It was the 23rd victory against Georgia Southern in school history.

The Cougars return home tonight, and will be right back in action Thursday afternoon when they host the Marquette Golden Eagles at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
