BROOKLINE, MASS. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (5-4, 0-1) came out aggressively to start the game, but defending CAA champs Northeastern (7-4-1, 1-0-1) corrected course after half-time and handed the Cougars a 3-0 defeat.
• The Cougars came out firing, led by
Laura Ortega's five first-half shots. CofC outshot the Huskies 8-4 after 45 minutes, and Ortega had several quality looks. Her best chance came late in the first half on a feed from
Maddy Brill-Edwards that sailed over the Northeastern defense. The Spaniard tried to chip it up and over the keeper, but it was just a hair too strong and wound up on top of the net.
• Despite being outshot in the opening frame, the Huskies stuck first on a beautiful goal from Chelsea Domond in the 31
st minute that painted the top corner just beyond the reach of a diving
Genevieve Henderson. After trailing in shots after the first half, NU finished the game with the slight 16-15 advantage.
• Northeastern scored again in the 61
st minute when Lizzie George finished off a cross from a severe angle, and again in the 84
th minute when Nicole Gorman got her first of the year on a feed from Katarina Nilsson.
• Henderson set a new career-high with eight saves in defeat. Her shutout streak, which had been intact since the second half of the Cougars' road-loss to Tennessee, ended at 427 minutes, six seconds.
• Brill-Edwards,
Meredith Tunney, and
Ana Lesmes played full 90 minute loads for the College.
The Cougars will return to action on Thursday, and will stay on the road to challenge the William & Mary Tribe.
