PINEHURST, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team finished runner-up with a three-round score of 880 (+16) at the 20th Annual Pinehurst Challenge held at the Pinehurst Golf Resort's No. 6 course on Tuesday.
It marked the Cougars' third-straight tournament finish in the Top 3 or better. CofC previously tied for second at the Jacksonville Classic on Oct. 2 and placed third at the Boston College Intercollegiate on Sept. 25.
North Florida won the team tournament title by two strokes with an 878 (+14) behind Sydney Shrader's 5-under par individual-medalist performance with rounds of 69, 71 and 71 — 211.
The tournament was previously played in the spring when the No. 6 course last served as host site of the Pinehurst Challenge in 2013.
"We played well again this week," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "But, we ran into another team better today. Give them (North Florida) credit. We haven't played bad in the last round in each of our last three tournaments – we have just had a team play better (in that last round). I'm proud of my team. Week-in and week-out, we are playing well and are there every week. We will break the door down eventually."
Junior Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) was the Cougars' top finisher tying for third at 2-over par for the tournament with rounds of 71, 74 and 73. It marked her third Top-5 individual finish of her career.
Four other golfers finished in the Top 20 individually including sophomore Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, S.C.), who tied for sixth a +3 (73, 71 and 75), sophomore Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England) tied for 10th at +5 (75, 73 and 73) and junior Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany) tied for 16th at +6 (75, 75 and 72). Huskey and Hamilton both led the tournament field in pars made (40).
Sophomore Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany), who played as an individual in the 92-player field, tied for sixth with a career-low 71 with three birdies in the final round.
"We have tons of depth and it's a great problem to have," Futrell said. "We are a strong team, no doubt about it. What we have done the last three weeks – being in contention every week – will pay off. It's a great experience and we will learn from it."
The Cougars will close out their fall season playing host to the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Oct. 21-23 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point course on Kiawah Island, S.C.
