KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team won its first tournament of the season with a three-round score of 872 (+8) at the 43-team Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Osprey Point and Oak Point courses.

The Cougars led wire-to-wire at the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country to beat runner-up Murray State (+15) by seven strokes, third-place Jacksonville (+18), fourth-place and CAA rival UNCW (+22) and fifth-place Western Kentucky (+25).

It marked CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell's 24th career win at The College and 27th overall of his career. Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.), who turned in a career-best finish tied for fourth with rounds of 70, 68 and 76 to finish 2-under par for the tournament.

"It was a great win for the team, because they worked extremely hard over the (winter) break to improve on our fall season," Futrell said. "It's great to see them rewarded for the work they put in and see them play with a lot of confidence. Today was very tough with the conditions. The wind was blowing hard out there today. But, they hung in there really well. I couldn't be happier for them."

In just her second tournament as a Cougar, junior newcomer Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile) tied for 15th (+3) including a second-round 66 which reset the school record for lowest individual round.

Senior Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden) tied for 27th (+6), freshman Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England) tied for 40th (+8) and sophomore Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany) tied for 51st (+10) including a final-round 73 in the 203-player tournament field.

All five players combined to card the lowest round in program history with a second-round 279 at Oak Point.

"The good thing is that we have several players who can go low," Futrell said. "Anna (Rottluff) came through with a 73 on a tough day which really helped seal the win for us. Victoria (Huskey) was awesome for the whole tournament. The great thing is, we have a lot of players who can step-up each day. We are not relying on one person to carry the team. It's really a true team effort right now."

There was a three-way tie for co-individual medalist honors as Lucila Puente Rodriguez of Murray State, Valentina Giraldo of Jacksonville State and Lyberty Anderson of UNCW shot a three-round 211 (-5).

In two weeks, the Cougars will host the Briar's Creek Invitational on March 19-20 at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek on Johns Island, S.C.
