JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile) shot a final-round 1-under par 71 as the College of Charleston women's golf team tied the University of Kansas for 11th on the final day of the Briar's Creek Invitational held on Tuesday at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
Nilsson, a midseason transfer from the University of South Carolina, was the Cougars' top finisher carding rounds of 75, 73 and 71 to finish at +3 for the tournament. She made four birdies in the final round and turned in her second-straight Top 20 finish after tying for 15th at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic where she recorded the lowest individual round (66) in school history.
Sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) and freshman Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany) both tied for 30th (+6). Meanwhile, sophomore Savanah Goodman (Easley, S.C.) shot a career-best tying 73 with three birdies in the final round to tie for 49th (+10).
"Obviously, the first day of the tournament was very disappointing, because we didn't play with confidence and to the level of play that we are capable of," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell. "I sent that message overnight to the team. Today, they showed they could compete very well with the teams that were here. We had a great day under tough conditions. I was very pleased with the outcome today. Moving forward, it should help us going into the Red Rocks tournament over spring break."
No. 29-ranked North Carolina was one of four Top 50-ranked teams in the tournament field and won the team title with a three-round score of 848 (-16) six strokes better than runner-up and No. 40-ranked Campbell (-10). The Tar Heels set a new tournament record for lowest tournament total (848) ahead of the previous record held by Florida (849 in 2017) in the tournament's six-year history. No. 23 Illinois placed third (+3) and No. 37 East Carolina eighth (+28).
The Cougars' top squad tied the Jayhawks for 11th (+34) shooting a final-round 297, while CofC's "B" squad placed 15th.
UNC's Kelly Whaley was the individual medalist shooting 12-under par for the tournament with rounds of 68-67-69–204. She now holds the tournament record for lowest tournament total previously held by Daniela Darquea of Miami (207 in 2015). Desieree Andersson of Campbell was the individual runner-up (-7).
The start of the final round was delayed an hour due to inclement weather. CofC and the entire field battled strong wind and rainy conditions throughout the day where the average score was 76.27.
The Cougars have a quick turnaround as they hop on a plane tomorrow for the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona on March 25-26 at the Oak Creek Country Club in Sedona, Ariz.
