CHARLESTON, S.C. – A wide-open race awaits the College of Charleston women's golf team and the field at the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship to be held on April 13-15 at St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C.
The Cougars have turned in three Top-5 finishes this season including two tournament victories at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic in February and the Red Rocks Invitational in March.
St. James Plantation is a par-72 course and will play at 6,066 yards. Charleston won its last conference title at the same course in 2015 and will contend for this year's title with UNCW, Delaware, Towson, James Madison, William & Mary, Elon and Hofstra.
"The conference is a wide-open race this year," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "I think as many as five teams have a legitimate shot at winning."
The Cougars will start sophomore Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.), junior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile), freshman Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England), freshman Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany) and senior Josefine Garton (Linkoping, Sweden). Nilsson, a mid-season transfer from South Carolina, currently leads the team with a 74.53 stroke average in just five starts this spring.
Last year, CofC was runner-up to two-time defending CAA champion Delaware at Ford's Colony Country Club in Williamsburg, Va. Garton earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament Team with a tied for fourth-place finish (+7). She and Huskey are the only two players on this year's starting squad to have played in the 2017 edition of the tournament.
"St. James has been good to us in the past," Futrell said. "We come in playing well with a lot of confidence. I look for us to make a run at the championship this week. It should be an exciting three days."
The Cougars will be paired with UNCW and Delaware and tee-off the No. 1 tomorrow in the first round beginning at 10:10 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
